Myrtle is a species of plant belonging to the genus Myrtos (Myrtus) and the family of Myrtaceae. The genus Myrtos includes around 75 species, which thrive in tropical and subtropical regions. In Greece we find Myrtus the common (Myrtus communis) native or cultivated for decorative. It is cultivated in the countryside, in pots and in greenhouses. It is used in perfumery, cosmetics manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. Produces essential oil (myrtle oil). Its durable wood is used in fine woodwork and its branches in basket-knitting.
